Is it Right For You ?

Hippotherapy is a very powerful tool when used properly and safely, and is recommended that it be used in conjunction with traditional clinical treatment techniques.

In particular, it can be an ideal tool for long-term neurological patients, including (though not limited to) people traumatic brain injury and developmental disabilities, that have seemingly reached a plateau in treatment using traditional types of techniques. Simple interaction with the horse creates an environment of new-found motivation for clients, not to mention the effect the movement of the horse has on the nervous system and motor planning. The barn also creates a natural environment for true activities of daily living and occupations to occur.

It is also important to note that hippotherapy differs greatly from therapeutic riding. Hippotherapy is an occupational therapy treatment intervention. It is a healthcare service. Therapeutic riding is a recreational activity teaching a handicap person to ride a horse. During a hippotherapy session the client is not controlling the horse in any way. The team’s trained professionals handle the client, and the horse. Hippotherapy treatment is performed and modified to achieve goals each session and improve ADL performance.

Animals are extremely motivating and can inspire us and touch us in ways that the traditional setting for therapy cannot. This is especially important because therapy is a participatory program. Your therapist can’t just do therapy to you, you have to participate and be engaged in the activities in order for them to be effective, and let’s face it, when you have been involved in the same traditional treatment activities, for a long time, they become a bit repetitious leading to decreased patient motivation and participation and therefore decreased improvements in treatment, which is why hippotherapy opens up a whole new opportunity for patients.

In that spirit, we find this poem especially relevant:

Let Me Teach You

When you are tense, let me teach you to relax.
When you are short tempered, let me teach you to be patient.
When you are short sited, let me teach you to see.
When you are quick to react, let me teach you to be thoughtful.
When you are angry, let me teach you to be serene.
When you feel superior, let me teach you to be respectful.
When you are self absorbed, let me teach you to think of greater things.
When you are arrogant, let me teach you humility.
When you are lonely, let me be your companion.
When you are tired, let me carry your load.
When you need to learn, let me teach you.

After all, I am your horse.
